PERSONALISED MENTORING FOR WRITERS

Our most popular service! Our personalised 1-to-1 mentoring offers tailored guidance and expert feedback to help fiction and non-fiction writers develop their craft, to progress and complete their projects, and to understand better what the publishing industry wants from them. Mentoring is usually conducted by Zoom or Skype calls, but we are flexible in our approach. You'll also receive detailed written critiques on your work-in-progress, its structure, concept, clarity, prose, character/dialogue, and how your work meets market expectations.

This is a wonderful approach, focusing on your project while developing your technical skills as a writer and fostering a deep, productive working relationship on which you can rely. One mentee described it as having a PhD tutor for her writing, someone she could trust and come to with all sorts of ideas, to chat to about her work, but also have the whole novel critiqued when she needed that, too.

The atmosphere is friendly, professional and creative. There are no rights and wrongs, only looking for ways to help you go forwards and grow. Mentoring aims to be a safe and collaborative space to share, develop and refine ideas, structures and narratives. It can be an ongoing process over months or even years or it can be brief and focus on specific aspects of your writing.

Pricing

We offer packages of mentoring with transparent, all-inclusive pricing. Our basic packages are: 10 hours of mentoring costing £650, 20 hours costing £1200 and 30 hours costing £1750. At the start of the process, we offer a free, no-obligation discussion of your needs to agree how mentoring will work best for you. This will usually take the form of a 10/15-minute phone or Zoom call.

You can buy mentoring below 10 hours or in additional chunks at £70 per hour. Your hours will include all reading, writing, meeting-preparation and meeting time so we recommend you begin with at least 10 hours. We will not routinely deduct time for general “administrative” email correspondence, but reserve the right to do so.

All prices are GBP. At time of writing £1 GBP = US$1.32 EUR1.18 CAN $1.77 AUS $1.94 (This is for guidance only and will change over time. You will be invoiced in GBP.)

Should I choose manuscript review or mentoring?
If you have a full or partial manuscript that you just want feedback on, without any other support or developmental work, or without 1:1 discussion, manuscript assessment is best for you. If you want a more flexible approach based on a supportive working relationship, in which you can have regular face-to-face Zoom meetings and flexible email contact to develop your skills, brainstorm ideas and receive general guidance and encouragement, mentoring is best for you. You can still have your entire novel read, provided you have purchased sufficient hours (we calculate 8000 words per hour of reading but this can vary).

Can I start with manuscript assessment and then buy mentoring or vice versa?
Yes, of course. We’ll even credit you £50 if you buy more than ten hours' mentoring or a full-manuscript review.
